King of Fighter 97 is also known as KOF '97 game format is the same as the previous KOF games, but introduces two different styles of play where players select their teams DAPT, advance mode based on the previous games in the series, KOF '96, but features Power gauge changed. Instead of charging the Power Gauge, Power Gauge is now filled whenever the player attacks the opponent or by performing Special Moves.
Additional modes based on the first two games in the series, KOF '94 and KOF '95. Like the competition, the players fill the Power Gauge by charging or defend against an opponent's attack. Once the gauge is filled, the player enters MAX mode and like in the face, violations of their character and the defense will be increased. Dedicated players can only do super Moves in MAX mode or when measuring live near empty and flashing red. When players do Super Mode MAX mode while measuring life flashes red, then Super moves are more powerful. Emergency Roll maneuver from KOF '96 used in Advance mode is replaced by a side-step from KOF '94 and KOF '95.
Players can share up to three measuring force. Players can use one Power Gauge stock to perform Super Special Move or enter a "MAX" mode, in which the strength of the defensive and offensive players to rise. Performing a Super Special Move while in MAX mode will make the players appear more powerful Super Move specific.
